United States provides $1.45 billion in annual assistance to support the Syrian refugees in Jordan
U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, revealed that the memorandum of understanding he signed with his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman al-Safadi, contains an agreement in which Jordan receives $ 1.45 billion for offering a refuge to the Syrians.
The memorandum of understating signed during a press conference, at the conclusion of the two ministers’ discussions in Washington.
Blinken said: “The memorandum of understanding that we signed today reflects the strength of relationship between the United States and Jordan.
Blinken added, “The memorandum of understanding contains $1.45 billion in annual aid provided by the United States in the period 2023-2029.”
Blinken praised Jordan’s role in providing basic support to refugees, and the role of its army in the war against ISIS.
The Jordanian foreign minister said: “The US assistance will enable his country to continue supporting the refugees, adding that the memorandum of understanding deepens the historic partnership between Washington and Amman.”
About 675,000 Syrian refugees live in Jordan and are listed in the UNHCR records, while the Jordanian government confirms that there are 1.3 million Syrians, a large part of them were in Jordan before 2011, due to lineage, intermarriage and trade.
