The Russian Foreign Ministry talks about new developments regarding the rapprochement between the Assad regime and Turkey
The Russian news agency “TASS” quoted Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov as saying: “The Russian side is actively participating in a dialogue with partners, regarding the proposal of providing a platform in order to hold a meeting between the foreign minister of the Assad regime and his Turkish counterpart.”
Bogdanov described contacts on this issue as “very active”.
The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said earlier that negotiations between his country and the Assad regime are limited to the two countries’ intelligence services, and they will determine the road map based on negotiations’ results.
The “Intelligence Online” website revealed that a meeting was held between Assad’s head of intelligence, Ali Mamlouk, and his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, under Russian mediation. Each side presented its demands and conditions, but the meeting’s results were not convincing, according to the website.
Another meeting was held between Assad regime’s foreign minister, Faisal Mikdad, with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement, which was held last October in the capital of Serbia, Belgrade.
