EU calls for accountability for human rights violations in Syria
The head of the EU delegation to Syria, Dan Stoenescu, tweeted on Friday that the EU renewed the call for accountability for human rights violations in Syria, expressing its concern about the fate of the Syrian missing and arbitrarily detained.
Stoenescu confirmed that the UN Human Rights Council in its 15th session adopted a draft resolution submitted by Britain, France, and other countries regarding the human rights situation in Syria. The resolution condemns the violations against the Syrian people and calls for revealing the fate of the detainees and releasing them.
Stoenescu added that “the findings in the recent report on the Sednaya prison are very concerning, pointing out that the European Union reaffirmed that more needs to be done.”
The Human Rights Council adopted on July 8 a resolution that strongly condemned the continued use of arbitrary detention, torture and ill-treatment, including sexual violence, enforced disappearances and summary executions.
The Chair of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, Paulo Pinheiro, has previously revealed that the work of the newly established “Independent Investigative Mechanism” to reveal the fate of detainees and forcibly disappeared persons in Syria.
