The Russian Sputnik news agency reported on Sunday that the UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen is expected to arrive in Damascus today to discuss the details of the next round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee’s meetings.
Sputnik news agency quoted a source as saying that the Assad regime’s Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad will meet Pedersen to discuss the ninth round of the Small Body of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, which was scheduled to be held on July 25.
For his part, Russian President’s Special Envoy to Syria Alexander Lavrentiev, said that “Russia considers it necessary to choose a new platform for the upcoming meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee instead of Geneva, which aims to redraft a new constitution for Syria, with the participation of the Syrian opposition and the Assad regime.”
The UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen announced on the last July 16 the postponement of the ninth session of the Syrian Constitutional Committee Meetings, which was scheduled for July 25-29, but no reasons were given.
