The New York Times: Russia has recently withdrawn troops and military equipment from Syria

“The New York Times” newspaper said that Russia has recently withdrawn troops and military equipment from the Hmeimim base in Syria and transferred them towards Ukraine.

The newspaper cited Western diplomats and a senior Israeli official that Russia has recently transferred some significant troops and weapons, including the air-defense system out of Syria.

Russia also transferred many Russian commanders and officers from Syria to Ukraine, according to the Israeli official.

The Israeli official made it clear that the Russian military command in Moscow has become less involved in the daily managing operations in Syria, including military coordination with Israel.

This step of transferring troops out of Syria shows “how the faltering Russian operation in Ukraine has eroded Moscow’s influence elsewhere in the world,” according to Western officials this comes after the Ukrainian forces regained parts of Kherson city, which holds moral value for Russia as it is the first area to be fully controlled.
