Reuters: Saudi Arabia plans to invite Bashar al-Assad to the Arab League summit
Saudi Arabia plans to invite Bashar al-Assad to the Arab League summit secluded for May 19 in Riyadh, Reuters announced on Sunday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Reuters said: “The foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, is heading to Damascus in the coming weeks to hand over an official invitation to Assad in order to attend the summit secluded for May 19 in Riyadh.
Reuters added: ” Saudi Arabia did not issue any official statements regarding the visit.”
Saudi Arabia announced earlier the reopening of embassies with the Assad regime and the resumption of suspended consular services.
It is noteworthy that the Assad regime is trying hard to restore its previous relations with the Arab countries, on the top of is Saudi Arabia, given that the doors are closed to it in the West, in light of the US insistence on its policy towards Assad and the continued imposition of sanctions on the Assad regime and its Iranian and Russian allies.
