Turkish Foreign Minister: The political meeting with the Assad regime could be an obstacle for us
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in a statement on Monday evening that Assad must be held accountable and that meeting him would not be an advantage for us in the elections and might be an obstacle to us, casting doubt on the impact of the political meeting that could be achieved between Bashar al-Assad and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Cavusoglu emphasized that a permanent solution for Syria is an urgent need to rebuild the country, and that the 11-year-old crisis cannot be resolved by holding a meeting or something like that.
The Turkish presidential elections will be held on May 14, amid competition between the ruling Justice and Development Party and its allies, most notably the Nationalist Movement Party, against an opposition alliance that includes a six-party table, led by Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.
A quadripartite meeting will be held between the foreign ministers of the Assad regime, Iran, Russia and Turkey in early May according to a statement by the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Monday.
Cavusoglu said that the meeting will take place in the Russian capital Moscow, according to Russia’s Sputnik state news agency. The Russian Ambassador to Syria Aleksandr Yefimov revealed on Monday that the quadripartite meeting has been postponed to next May.
