US lawmakers on the Senate Foreign Relations and Foreign Affairs committees in the House of Representatives condemned Arab normalization with the Assad regime, stressing that the return of the Assad regime to the League of Arab States is a “strategic mistake”, and should be reversed immediately.
US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Bob Menendez said: “Bashar al-Assad is a war criminal. This is the case in short, pointing out that further efforts towards normalization ignore the abuses of the Assad regime.
Menendez emphasized that Bashar al-Assad runs a drug state and that his continued smuggling of Captagon threatens communities throughout the region.
The senator of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCall, confirmed that Bashar al-Assad bombed Syrians and undermined regional stability.
Steps are accelerating from Arab and Gulf countries to normalize relations with the Assad regime since the earthquake disaster last February 6, as the moves take on a relief stamp, amid talks about attempts to restore Syria’s membership in the Arab League, suspended since 2011.
On Friday, the GCC, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt held a consultative meeting at which they discussed the return of the Assad regime to the League of Arab States.
