Cavusoglu: The majority of Arab countries do not want to give a blank check for Assad regime’s return to the Arab League
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that “The majority of Arab countries do not want to give a blank check for Assad regime’s return to the Arab League as if nothing happened.”
Cavusoglu added in a statement to a Turkish TV channel that “The countries want Assad regime to take a step regarding the political process as it is the way to unify Syria” otherwise “the Syrian Democratic Forces will get stronger.”
Cavusoglu affirmed that everyone wants to guarantee the exclusion of the military solution and the safe return of refugees.”
Cavusoglu continued that “We have engaged in dealing with the government of Assad regime in Damascus and we may hold a joint press conference at the end of foreign ministers’ meeting in Moscow. He also pointed out that we can’t get a head of matters concerning what we will agree on through our coming meeting that day.”
Cavusoglu emphasized that “the Syrian administration should answer this question clearly: Does it still believe in a military solution, or in the possibility of a political solution? There is no middle-ground solution between them. Cavusoglu stressed the impossibility of the military solution, adding that if the Syrian administration adopts a political solution, the possibility of reaching a solution will increase. But if the administration refuses and decides to continue fighting everyone at all costs, the solution will take decades.
Cavusoglu warned against the risks of dividing Syria and the occurrence of a wave of migration due to the bad economic situation inside the country.
Cavusoglu had expected to hold the quadripartite in Moscow with the foreign ministers of Russia, Iran and the Assad regime, early on May, pointing out that Turkey was involved in these negotiations following the blockage of the political track in Syria.
