Hossam Zaki: The Arab League’s decision to reinstate the Assad regime has no conditions

The Assistant Secretary General of the Arab League, Hossam Zaki, said on Saturday that the Arab League’s decision to reinstate the Assad regime to occupy Syria’s seat has no conditions.

Zaki stated to “France 24” channel that the Arab countries are not prepared to defy the American and Western sanctions imposed on Assad regime.

Zaki pointed out that the Arab foreign ministers discussed in the last meeting the reconstruction of Assad regime-held areas, but the Arab countries don’t want to clash with Washington or taking the risk regarding the sanctions.

Zaki emphasized that Assad regime’s return to the Arab League requires understandings agreed on by all parties, including the Syrian side, in order for the return to be a form of a political settlement in Syria.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said on Wednesday that the return of the Assad regime to occupy Syria’s seat in the Arab League will take a long time and many gradual steps.

Aboul Gheit claimed that he does not not know whether Assad regime will actually return to the Arab League or not, pointing out at the same time that he did not receive any letter regarding holding a meeting to discuss the return of Syria’s membership to the Arab League.

The Arab summit is scheduled to be held in Jeddah on May 19. Aboul Gheit expected the summit to have an “imprint on the Arab situation in general.”
