Iraqi Foreign Ministry: “We support the path of achieving civil peace in Syria”
Assad regime foreign minister Faisal al-Miqdad held talks on Sunday in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad with Iraqi officials under the title “Strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and discussing their development.”
The ambassador of the Assad regime to Iraq, Sattam Al-Dandah, said that “these discussions came in light of strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries, discussing efforts to restore joint Arab coordination, and thanking the Iraqis for standing by the Syrians during the earthquake disaster,” according to the loyal Al-Watan newspaper.
The Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Al-Sahhaf said that Baghdad supports the path of achieving civil peace in Syria, pointing out that his country has a clear and principled position on the Syrian crisis.
Al-Sahhaf stressed that the Syrian crisis must be politically and not militarily. Iraq and Syria seek to strengthen bilateral efforts to “control the joint borders, prevent terrorist infiltration and exchange intelligence information to ensure the security of the border.”
The Iraqi Foreign Minister welcomed during the talks Assad regime’s return to the Arab League. He also pointed out that his country one of the initiators” of Syria’s return to the Arab League.
Al-Sahhaf claimed that the Iraqi government will work in the next stage to deliver humanitarian aid to Syria, and to hold continuous discussions within the five-year framework with Assad regime Foreign Minister on how to deal with the humanitarian situation in Syria, which directly affects the Iraq.
For his part, Al-Miqdad said that “the continuous communication with Iraq and the unification of the will of the two peoples is a necessary and important matter for the two countries.” He added, “We look forward to working together, fighting terrorism, eliminating the danger of drugs, and ending sanctions.”
It is noteworthy that Assad regime foreign minister, Faisal al-Miqdad, arrived on Saturday, in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, in response to an invitation from the Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, to hold talks with the Iraqi leadership and senior Iraqi officials, with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries and discussing ways to develop them.
