Iraq’s Prime Minister arrives in Damascus for his first official visit since the beginning of the Syrian revolution
The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, arrived in Damascus on Sunday for his first official visit since the beginning of the Syrian revolution in 2011.
The visit came at the invitation of the Assad regime to Al-Sudani, with the aim of discussing more prospects of bilateral cooperation and joint action in order to secure stability in the region, according to the Baghdad News Agency.
The official Iraqi News Agency (INA) also quoted the Media office of the Prime Minister as saying: “Al-Sudani left today the Iraqi capital heading towards Damascus on an official visit.”
For its part, SANA news agency said that “Al-Sudani will meet with the President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday.”
This is the first official visit of an Iraqi prime minister to Damascus since 2010, when former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki visited it.
Regarding Assad regime’s return to the Arab League, Iraq played significant role through the gate of the Arab Parliament, as the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament called on Syria to attend the Arab summits last February.
