Syrian civil organizations warn the “International Court of Justice” against Assad regime’s manipulation of the political process
Civil, international, and Syrian organizations sent an open letter to the International Court of Justice warning against Assad regime’s manipulating of political and accountability processes aiming to avoid confrontation related to his crimes in Syria and calling for preventing this manipulation.
The organizations expressed their concerns after the International Court of Justice postponed the public hearings for 3 months, regarding the Dutch-Canadian complaint as requested by Assad regime.
The organizations emphasized through the letter the need for explaining the rationale behind the postponement and re-think this decision, pointing out that torture’s victims can’t wait any longer.
The organizations also accused Assad regime of violating the UN Convention against Torture (CAT) and other human rights abuses.
The organizations stressed the need to “take the necessary measures to ensure access to information and more effective participation in the next steps by victims and survivors.”
The organizations called for finding more effective ways to ensure full access to information for Syrian civil society and the public, by covering the hearings in Arabic language.
It is noteworthy that the opening of public hearings were scheduled to take place on the 19th and 20th of July, on the complaint filed by the Netherlands and Canada, and as requested by the Assad regime, it was postponed for three months, to be held on the 10th-11th of October 2023.
