WFP’s Deputy Executive Director, Carl Skau, announced that the cutting in food assistance and cash payments to millions of people in several countries, including Syria, is because of the stifling funding crisis.
Skau said during a press conference: “The donations received by the WFP have been reduced by half, and 38 out of 86 countries, including Syria, have already witnessed a cut in aid.
Skau made it clear that “5.5 million people in Syria, who rely on WFP, have got now only 50% of their rations”
Skau warned that “The needs are continuing to grow while the funding is drying up, which means that the coming year will be more serious.”
Skau pointed out that the operating requirements of the WFP is $20 billion to provide aid to all those in need, but the aim was to raise $10 billion and $14 billion, but this year the WFP only got $5 billion.
