“The National” magazine: Pedersen’s mission faces more challenges to reach a political solution in Syria
“The National” magazine said in a report United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, is facing more challenges in his mission to reach an unspecified political transition in Syria, in light of Bashar al-Assad’s recent statements.
Middle East affairs specialist, Mona Yacoubian, said that Arab normalization with the Assad regime complicates the mission of UN envoy Geir Pedersen.
Yacoubian considered that this step directed another serious blow to the United Nations peace process, in addition to Russia’s refusal to engaged in Geneva.
A member of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, Khaled al-Haloun, made it clear that Pedersen is still continuing his work because he realizes that any solution in Syria is not in the hands of Bashar al-Assad, according to the magazine.
Al-Haloun stressed that the Assad regime does not realize how weak he is, and that if the United States and Russia ever agree, a solution will be imposed, whether he wants it or not.
Al-Haloun pointed out that Russia would have imposed a “formal political solution to the Syrian war that would strengthen the Assad regime in Damascus, with the cooperation of Iran and Turkey, were it not for the invasion of Ukraine last year.
Bashar al-Assad spoke during an interview with “Sky News Arabia” channel in Damascus last Wednesday, in which he addressed the events in Syria, and his positions with some countries and currents.
Bashar al-Assad considered that the relationship with the Arab countries will remain a formality, and the Arab League has not turned into an institution in the true sense.
