Mekdad: The Arab countries should cooperate to return the Syrian refugees to their country
Assad regime foreign minister, Faisal al-Mekdad, stressed the need for Arab countries to cooperate in order to return the Syrian refugees.
This statement came during his participation in the meeting of the “Arab Ministerial Liaison Committee”, and he called on Arab countries to contribute in implementing the early recovery projects.
Al-Mekdad claimed that the Assad regime “has taken many measures and facilities for the return of Syrian refugees to their country.”
Al-Mekdad stressed the need to “give the issue of Syrian refugees the necessary priority and attention.”
Al-Mekdad claimed that the Assad regime “welcomes the cooperation in the field of refugees’ return, but there are difficulties related to the economic situation behind which terrorism stands, and the sanctions imposed by the United Nations on us.”
According to al-Mekdad, the Assad regime is cooperating with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on the issue of the return of refugees, and that it has provided a lot of concessions to the UNHCR in its work in Syria.
Al-Mekdad considered that Western countries “obstruct any approach towards implementing early recovery projects, and are working to politicize this issue.”
Al-Mekdad stressed the need to intensify efforts and initiatives for the early recovery project, pointing out that the humanitarian response has long-term aspects and is not limited to providing life-saving aid only.
The “Arab Ministerial Liaison Committee” concerned with Syria concluded on Tuesday evening its meeting in the Egyptian capital Cairo with the participation of the foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, and the Assad regime, in addition to the Secretary-General of the Arab League.
