The delegation of the Syrian Negotiations Commission held on Tuesday, 5, 2023, a meeting with the UN Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen in Geneva to discuss the latest developments in Syria, including the protests in Sweida and Daraa and the clashes in Deir Ezzor.
The meeting included the head of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, Bader Jamous, the joint president of Constitutional Committee, Hadi al-Bahra, the Vice President of the opposition delegation in Geneva, Alice Mufarrej, and the official of the Legal Committee, and the member of the Small Body of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, Tariq al-Kurdi.
The delegation of the Syrian Negotiations Commission emphasized the importance of fully implementing the resolution 2254. The delegation also stressed that there is no alternative to the political transition and holding Assad regime accountable for the crimes committed against the Syrian people.
The delegation confirmed the importance of the renewed movement of the Syrian people in Sweida and Daraa and their insistence on freedom and justice, as well as the rightful demands of the tribal clans in Deir Ezzor, east of Euphrates River, according to sources in Negotiations Commission.
The delegation of the Commission also discussed “ways to activate the political process, including the Constitutional Committee and implementing the UN Security Council resolutions.”
Geir Pedersen previously said, in an interview with the American website Al-Monitor, that “My job is to remind the international community that Syria is in a continuing crisis, pointing out that it is first and foremost a crisis of epic proportions for the Syrian people and for the neighboring countries that contain huge number of refugees.
The governorates of Daraa and Sweida have been witnessing, since the beginning of this week, demonstrations and protests calling for the downfall of the Assad regime, and chanting slogans calling for freedom and releasing the detainees as well as demanding the unity of the Syrian people. These demonstrations coincide with the circulation of videos by activists from the Syrian coast, criticizing Bashar al-Assad and his regime.
The villages and towns of Idleb southern countryside have been continuously subjected to bombardment by the Assad regime forces and Russia, causing dozens of civilian casualties.
