The Arab League decides to drop Syria’s obligations accumulated since 2012
The Arab foreign ministers issued on Sunday a resolution stipulating to drop all the accumulated obligations on Syria, since its membership was suspended from 2012 until 2022, including all Arab League’s budgets, the affiliated organizations and all specialized ministerial councils.
A diplomatic source said in a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper: “The resolution came during a session of the Arab League at the foreign minister level through its 160th session at the General Secretariat of the League.”
The Arab League declared on May 7, 2023, the re-admitting Syria after a 12-year suspension. It is scheduled that the summit will address main issues, including the Palestinian cause, the Syrian and Sudanese crisis, in addition to economic files within the framework of Arab League’s development plans.
American lawmakers in the Foreign Relations Committees in the Senate and Foreign Affairs Committees in the House of Representatives condemned Arab normalization with the Assad regime, stressing the Assad regime’s return to the Arab League is a “strategic mistake” and should be reversed immediately.
The Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in the US Senate Bob Menendez said: “Bashar al-Assad is a war criminal. This is the case in short, pointing out that further efforts towards normalization ignore the abuses of the Assad regime.”
