Qatar calls on Human Rights Council to find a solution in order to end the Syrians’ suffering
The Minister of State for the International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar state, Lolwah al-Kahater, said on Tuesday, 27 February 2024, that Qatar calls on the Human Rights Council to unify the efforts to find a solution in Syria to end the Syrians’ suffering.
Al-Kahater’s statement came during her speech in the 55th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Al-Kahater made it clear that the Syrian crisis must be addressed as it still represents the world’s largest displacement challenge, pointing out that there are 12 million Syrian refugees.
Al-Kahater stressed the need to end the ongoing Syrian people’s suffering for 13 years, and to achieve their legitimate aspirations, and to facilitate the safe and dignified return for the refugees.
Al-Kahater stated that despite the internation efforts exerted to help the Syrian people, the situation in Syria still raises concerns.
The European Union had previously emphasized its support for the political process in Syria and the resumption of the Syrian Constitutional Committee’s works, stressing that the only way to move forward is a real political transition in accordance with UNSCR 2254.
Meanwhile, the head of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, Badr Jamous, said, “Normalization with the Assad regime without achieving political progress will not bring back the displaced and will not contribute to achieving sustainable stability in Syria and the region.”
