UN official: Syria has become a theater for overlapping wars and a place for testing weapons
The member of the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, Hanny Megally, confirmed that “Syria has become a theater for overlapping proxy wars, and a place for testing weapons, and the involvement of foreign armies in Syria is part of the problem.”
Megally’s statement came in an interview with a UN news website.
Megally said: “Russia and Iran support the Assad regime, the United States and its partners in the international coalition support the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeastern Syria, Turkey supports opposition groups in the northwest, while Israel targets Iranian militias on the ground, and Jordan pursues drug smugglers in the south.”
Megally added: “The intervention of these countries has prolonged the conflict, as Syria became a place where they can test weapons, use old weapons that they no longer need to keep, and attack each other in a way that would be more dangerous than if they were attacking each other directly.”
Megally pointed out: “External intervention is not bringing solutions to the problem, but rather is prolonging the situation, creating a state of stagnation, and a never-ending cycle of violence. If everyone left, the Syrians would most likely solve their problems on their own.”
Megally concluded by saying: “Syria needs help now, and above all, a ceasefire, calling on the world not to forget Syria, because it risks being left behind at a point where violence returns to increase.”
