Russia accused Israel on Wednesday, 3 April 2024, of fueling the conflict in the Middle East following targeting the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
Moscow’s United Nations envoy Vasily Nebenzia said at a Security Council meeting: “We urge the international community to unconditionally condemn the reckless actions carried out by Israel that violate Syria Arab Republic’s sovereignty and the inviolability of the diplomatic facilities.”
Nebenzia pointed out that Russia calls on all the responsible members in the international community to provide objective and legal assessments of the Israeli aggression in the Middle East area.
Nebenzia confirmed that Israel does not only disregard the provisions of the United Nations Charter and the relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, but also disregards the basic principles of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic and Consular Relations.
Nebenzia described the Israeli targeting during the session as a |flagrant violation” of Syria’s sovereignty, stressing that Moscow believes that such aggressive actions by Israel aim to fuel the conflict.
For his part, Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev condemned, during discussions with Secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, Ali Ahmadian, the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
Many Arab and Islamic countries and military formations condemned, in multiple statements, the Israeli targeting of a building near the Iranian consulate in central Damascus, which led to the killing of many commanders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and militia in Syria and Lebanon.
