The Gulf Cooperation Council calls on Assad regime to fulfill its commitments to Amman and Cairo meetings
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) confirmed its support to the political solution in Syria in line with the UNSCR 2254, calling on Assad regime to fulfill its commitments to Amman and Cairo meetings.
The statement comes during the 160th session of the Gulf Cooperation Council ministerial meeting in the Qatari capital, Doha, headed by the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar state, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, with the participation of the foreign ministers of the GCC countries.
The statement said: “The position of the GCC is unwavering towards Syria which is to preserve Syria’s unity and respect its independence sovereignty.”
The statement added that the “GCC supports the UN efforts to reach a political solution in Syria in accordance with the UNSCR 2254 and the relevant UN resolutions.”
The statement “emphasized its support for the efforts of the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, and the efforts made to care for Syrian refugees and displaced persons and work for their voluntary and safe return to their country in accordance with international standards.”
The Gulf Cooperation Council rejected in its statements any attempts to bring about demographic change in Syria, in addition to regional interference in its internal affairs.
The GCC added: “The Assad regime must fulfill the commitments contained in the statement of the meeting in the Jordanian capital, Amman, issued on May 1, 2023, as well as contained in the statement of the Cairo meeting on August 15, 2023.”
The GCC had previously said in its previous meetings: “It is necessary to resume the Constitutional Committee meetings, which have been halted due to opposition by Assad regime and Russia to hold the ninth round in Geneva.”
