UN: We must act quickly because the situation on the ground in Syria is catastrophic
The United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria, Adam Abdel Mawla, stated that “The situation on the ground is catastrophic, and the United Nations and its humanitarian agencies intend to launch an early recovery plan, includes all the Syrian territories.”
The UN official’s statement came at the conclusion of a three-day visit he made to al-Hasakah governorate.
Al-Mawla said: “With increasing humanitarian needs and cutting fund, we must do things in a different way and focus on early recovery to break the cycle of aid dependence.”
Al-Mawla added that al-Hasakah governorate is suffering from a cute water shortage. The ongoing hostilities, destruction of civilian infrastructure, climate shocks, continuing displacement, and economic deterioration are among the critical issues facing the people in the governorate.
During his visit to Al-Hol camp al-Mawla also added: “The international community must act quickly to find sustainable solutions to the issue of Al-Hol camp.”
He pointed out at the end of his visit: “The partners are doing an excellent job with very limited resources, and we must find new ways to work and invest in long-term solutions that will help lift people out of poverty.”
It is noteworthy that the UN official’s plan focuses on four areas: health, education, water and sanitation, and livelihoods, and the extensions these sectors need in the field of basic electricity for the functioning of all these sectors.
