US Congress calls for redoubling efforts to hold Assad regime accountable everywhere
The US Senate (Congress) called on the United States to redouble its efforts to hold Assad regime accountable and pursue war criminals in Syria anywhere.
Congress’s call for holding Assad regime accountable came after arresting the former governor of Deir Ezzor, affiliated with the Assad regime, Samir Othman Al-Sheikh.
The top Republican of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Jim Risch, said: “The arrest of an Assad regime official in plain sight is a reminder that we must redouble accountability efforts in Syria.”
Risch added: “Bashar al-Assad and his companions can remain in Syria or face arrest, because the world is closed to them.”
The Republican Senator, French Hill, said: “Bashar al-Assad and his regime should not be spared from justice anywhere outside Syria.”
Hill pointed out: “The arrest of Al-Sheikh is a major victory in the ongoing struggle for justice and tireless work for the Syrian people.”
It is noteworthy that Samir Othman Al-Sheikh is from Idleb Governorate. He played a role during his term in office as governor of Deir Ezzor through besieging the city’s neighborhoods and then storming them by Assad regime forces. He contributed to the arrest, torture and killing of thousands of people from Deir Ezzor and its countryside.
