Italy: We have to create conditions to allow the safe and voluntary return of Syrian refugees to their country
Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, said: “Rome is committed to raise the issue of Syrian refugees at the international and European level, and supports all the efforts of the UN commissions for refugees.”
Meloni’s statement came in a joint conference in Beirut with the Lebanese caretaker prime minister, Najib Mikati.
Meloni added: “Italy has been committed to this issue (the refugees’ issue) for a long time, and it is working with its European partners to create the necessary conditions to allow the return of refugees to Syria in a voluntary, safe, sustained, and dignified manner.”
Meloni pointed out that “the European countries have to restore ties with Assad regime aiming to stop the illegal immigration to Europe.”
Meloni noted that “it is necessary to invest in early recovery, so the refugees who decided to return find conditions that allow them to reintegrate into Syria.”
At the conclusion of her speech, Meloni stressed: “The European Union must review its strategy regarding Syria and work with all actors to create conditions for the voluntary, safe and sustained return of Syrian refugees to their country.”
