Al-Bahra: Syria will remain unsafe for refugee return before the accountability mechanisms are activated
The head of the Syrian National Coalition, Hadi al-Bahra, confirmed that Syria will not be safe for voluntary return of refugees before the accountability mechanisms are activated.
Al-Bahra said in a statement that Assad regime’s crimes are one the main reasons of displacement and asylum in Syria.
Al-Bahra considered that “targeting civilians’ homes, their farms, and their facilities by Assad regime and its backers represents their insist on escalation, endangers the lives of hundreds of civilians in the countryside of Aleppo and Idleb, and causes new waves of displacement.”
Al-Bahra emphasized that the Assad regime and its supporters’ ongoing war crimes using the repression and terrorism approach is one of the main causes of displacement and asylum waves for more than half of Syria’s population.
Al-Bahra pointed out that “Syria remains unsafe for the voluntary return of refugees and will not be safe until the international community assumes its responsibilities by activating accountability mechanisms and taking binding measures to stop the ongoing crimes that seriously affect the lives of civilians and the security of the region, and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis that Syrians have been experiencing for years.”
The Syrian Civil Defence warned a few days ago of “a new humanitarian catastrophe and possible waves of displacement” in the northwestern region of Syria as winter approaches, in light of the continued military escalation by Assad regime forces in the region
