OCHA allocates US$25 million to support the region of north-west Syria in winter
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs allocated a reserve of US$25 million for the first time for 2024 titled “Ensuring Life-Saving Winter Assistance and Critical Services for Populations in Northwest Syria.”
The allocation aims to address the critical needs during winter and prioritize the life-saving support and resilience for the vulnerable, according to OCHA.
OCHA stated that “the Deputy Regional Humanitarian Coordinator, in consultation with the Advisory Board and Inter-Cluster Coordination Group, has allocated about US$25 million for the first time this year.”
The funding is divided into two strategic envelopes, the firs: “Ensuring humanitarian life-saving, and life-sustaining, multi-sectoral winter assistance for populations at risk in northwest Syria with US$10 million.”
The second: “Maintaining continuous access to basic services while enhancing the resilience of vulnerable populations in north-west Syria with US$15 million.”
This allocation supports targeted, coordinated and multi-sector humanitarian efforts in the areas of camp management and coordination, education, early recovery, health, multi-purpose cash assistance, shelter, water and sanitation.
OCHA stressed that while the urgent needs for basic services and assistance to the population have been addressed, this allocation remains necessary to address the large funding gap within the humanitarian response in Syria.
