The 22nd round of Astana on Syria kicks off in Kazakhstan with the presence of the guarantor countries
The 22nd round of Astana talks on Syria kicked off on November 11, in the Kazakh capital, Astana, and is scheduled over two days, with the participation of guarantor countries, Turkey, Russia, Iran, and the delegations of Assad regime and the Syrian opposition in addition to the presence of international organizations and observer countries.
The meetings will begin to hold bilateral and trilateral deliberations among delegations followed by a plenary session and a press conference at the conclusion of the second day, according to the statement by the Kazakh foreign ministry.
These meetings will discuss various issues, including measures to build confidence between the Syrian parties, the efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive political solution, and the conditions for the return of Syrian refugees to their country, according to the statement.
The 21st round of the “Astana Track” regarding Syria was previously held last January, with the participation of delegations of the guarantor countries, Russia, Turkey, Iran, the delegations of the Assad regime and the Syrian opposition, and the presence of Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq as observers, in addition to the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The round discussed the issue of resuming the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, releasing detainees, and ceasing the escalation in Idleb.
The participants stressed the need to confront separatist plans in Syria, emphasize the need to increase aid to Syrians throughout the country and the safe return of Syrian refugees to their country under the supervision of the United Nations, and the importance of maintaining the ceasefire in Idleb in the north of the country.
