Ahmed Tohme: We asked Russia to bring the views closer between the opposition and Assad regime
The head of the Syrian opposition delegation to Astana, Ahmed Tohme, said that the current situation does not support stability of Syria or peace operation.
Tohme added in press statements that the Syrian opposition delegation asked Russia to play a greater role to bring the views closer between the opposition and Assad regime, expressing his hope about the possibility of improving the situation.
Tohme considered that the current conditions that Syria and the region saw are an appropriate opportunity to unify the parties, stressing the need for Russia to press Assad regime to engage in the peace operation and to play a positive role in this.
Tohme continued, saying: “The Assad regime must realize the importance of returning to negotiations under the supervision of the United Nations, and show seriousness in the work of the Constitutional Committee to achieve peace in Syria.”
The 22nd round of the “Astana Track” talks on Syria was concluded on November 12 in the Kazakh capital, Nur-Sultan, with the participation of representatives of the Assad regime, the opposition, Turkey, Russia, and Iran.
The guarantor countries of the “Astana Track” emphasized in the final statement the necessity of maintaining calm in Idleb province, which is subject to the de-escalation agreement.
