US Department of State: Assad regime has failed to comply with the ICJ’s decision
US State Department announced that Assad regime failed to comply with the Internation Court of Justice’s decision, one year after its issuance.
US State Department’s statement comes following the Syrian Network for Human Rights’ recommendations during the meetings on the sidelines of UN General Assembly.
The statement referred to the Syrian Network for Human Rights’ data which documented the killing of 15,000 Syrian citizens under torture, including US citizens.
The statement said that “One year ago, The United States welcomed the provisional measures order by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) calling Assad regime to take all the immediate measures to prevent torture and cruel treatment or punishment.”
The statement considered that the ICJ’s decision is an additional step towards holding to account the responsible for thousands of victims and survivors of torture and other forms of ill-treatment in Syria.
The Assad regime failed to comply with these directives (the provisional measures order). The Human Rights and legal organizations continue to document Assad regime’s use of arbitrary arrest, torture of detainees, including recently the Syrians fleeing the conflict in Lebanon, according to the statement.
The statement called on Assad regime to “immediately cease its brutal and systematic use of torture and comply with the International Court of Justice’s order.”
The statement concluded: “We will continue in cooperation with our international partners to seek a sustainable political solution to the conflict in Syria based on justice and accountability.”
Since the issuance of the International Court of Justice’s decision, the Syrian Network for Human Rights has issued four reports documenting the Assad regime’s violations of the decision over the past year.
