Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, said in a press conference that “the policy of US President-elect Donald Trump regarding Syria has not yet become clear.”
Fidan said: “The Trump administration will build its policies regarding Syria during the next stage on the results of an assessment of the extent of what is happening in the Arab country affecting Israel and its security.”
Fidan added: “The United States, which follows a foreign policy focused on the security factor, is supposed to be the most capable of understanding Turkey’s concerns.”
Fidan pointed out: “During his first term, Trump intended to withdraw US forces from Syria, and he had tried to do so, but the US regime at the time did not allow this goal to be achieved.”
Fidan made it clear that “the strategic problems between Ankara and Washington will continue as long as the United States continues to support the Syrian Democratic Forces organization in Syria.”
The last high-level meeting between Ankara and Washington on Syria was last September, when US Acting Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs John Bass met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and other officials.
