Today at 4 a.m. Syria turned the page on Bashar al-Assad’s regime, according to the statement of the Military Operations Department of the Syrian Revolutionary Opposition which confirmed his downfall.

The Syrian opposition added in its statement: “After 50 years of oppression under Baath rule, and 13 years of crimes, tyranny, and displacement… today we declare the end of this dark era and the beginning of new era for Syria.

The Syrian opposition announced in a video statement broadcasted by Syrian State TV that the city of Damascus has been liberated and the Assad regime has been overthrown and all detainees have been released from the regime’s prisons. The opposition also called on citizens to preserve state property.

Officers told Reuters on Sunday: “Bashar al-Assad has boarded a plane and left Damascus for an unknown destination.”

The Chargé d’Affaires at the Syrian Embassy in Qatar, Bilal Turkiya, said in an interview with Al Arabiya TV: “Bashar al-Assad has fled and left the Syrians to decide their fate,” suggesting that he may have headed to Russia.

For his part, The Director of the Policy Department at the Harmoon Center for Contemporary Studies, Samir Al-Abdullah, indicated that Bashar fled to Russia with his family.

Speaking to Al-Arabi TV from Istanbul, Al-Abdullah indicated that most of the Assad regime’s officers headed to the Syrian coast.

There were allegations on social media pages about Bashar al-Assad leaving on a plane from Damascus to the city of Latakia.

Data from the “Flight Radar” website indicated that a Syrian plane took off from Damascus Airport at the same time, when reports were received that opposition factions had taken control of the capital.

According to data from the air traffic tracking website, the aircraft initially flew towards the Syrian coastal region, but then suddenly changed course and flew in the opposite direction for a few minutes before disappearing off the map.
