Syrian official delegation arrives in Saudi Arabia in its first visit abroad since Assad regime’s fall
A Syrian official delegation headed by the Foreign Minister, Assad al-Shibani arrived in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, in its first visit abroad since the downfall of the regime of the ousted president Bashar al-Assad.
The Saudi Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Walid Abdulkarim El-Khereiji, received the Syrian delegation which includes the Foreign Minister, Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra, and the General Intelligence Service head Anas Khatab, as they arrived at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
The Syrian Foreign Minister said in a post on “X” platform: “This visit came at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Faisal bin Farhan.”
Al-Shibani added: “Through this first visit in the history of Free Syria, we aspire to open a new and bright page in the Syrian-Saudi relations fitting with the long-shared history between the two countries.”
For his part, the advisor at the Royal Court and the general supervisor of the King Salman Center, Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabiah, confirmed that the Saudi relief air bridge will be followed by a land bridge during the next few days to provide more urgent relief to the Syrians.
On the 23rd of last month, the leader of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, received a Saudi delegation headed by an advisor to the Royal Court, at the People’s Palace in the capital, Damascus.
It is noteworthy that on December 8, 2024, the Syrian opposition took control of the capital, Damascus, with the withdrawal of Assad regime forces from public institutions and the streets, thus ending a 61-year era of Baath Party rule and 53 years of Assad family rule.
