The Arab Group countries affirmed during the UN Security Council on Syria yesterday, Wednesday, their keenness to respect Syria’s sovereignty and independence and reject foreign interference in it, pointing out that the stability of Syria is considered stability for the Middle East.

Kuwait’s representative to the United Nations, Tareq Albanai said in a speech on behalf of permanent delegations of the Gulf states, “The Gulf states participate in the Security Council session only to confirm their assistance to Syria politically, economically, developmentally, and humanitarianly.”

According to Albanai, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries “stress the necessity of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, rejecting foreign interference, combating terrorism, extremism and fanaticism, and that its stability represents a fundamental pillar of the security of the Middle East region.”

GCC countries also support “a comprehensive and inclusive political transition, backing a national reconciliation and efforts to rebuild the state, and encouraging national unity and comprehensive dialogue with the participation of all components of the Syrian people, to achieve a Syrian-led political process with the support of the United Nations.”

Regarding the Israeli incursions, Albanai, said, “The GCC states categorically reject the repeated attacks by the Israeli occupation forces on Syria and call for their immediate withdrawal from the occupied Syrian territories.”

In turn, Egypt’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Osama Abdel Khalek, delivered a speech on behalf of the Arab Group, in which he affirmed the Arab countries’ full support for the Syrian people, and their keenness for the current transitional phase to be a starting point for a bright future.

Abdel Khalek added that the Arab Group “emphasizes the sovereignty, integrity, unity and independence of the Syrian territories, and condemns Israel’s attacks on them, by bombing Syrian cities, installations and infrastructure, in a flagrant violation of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.”

The Arab Group also calls for “intervention to maintain peace and security, stop the Israeli aggression, and put an end to this occupation, and also calls for an end to the illegal presence of all foreign forces in Syrian territory.”

The Arab Group calls for “intensifying efforts to address the current humanitarian crisis in Syria, providing humanitarian support to the brotherly Syrian people, including cooperation with relevant United Nations organizations, and creating appropriate conditions to begin the voluntary and safe return of Syrians.”

Egypt’s Ambassador also concluded his speech by affirming the Arab Group’s firm position “regarding supporting Syria and not leaving it alone,” noting that “Syrian security is an essential pillar of Arab national security, which we are working to preserve and protect like all our countries.”
