The coalition welcomes the British government’s stand towards European sanctions against the Assad regime
The National Coalition welcomed the commitment shown by the British government to hold accountable those responsible for crimes in Syria, and notes in particular its decision to transfer European Union sanctions against the Assad regime and its partners to the UK sanctions regime.
The coalition expressed its full readiness to cooperate with the United Kingdom through its team dedicated to following up the implementation of the US Caesar Penal Code until the criminals are held accountable, and the political solution is implemented in accordance with Security Council resolutions.
The coalition pointed out that the crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and the gross violations of human rights committed by the Assad regime against the Syrian people require exceptional attitude from international actors to ensure accountability for criminals and to ensure transitional justice within the framework of a political solution.
The coalition also affirmed its keenness to take into account the humanitarian situation in Syria, stressing that the sanctions exclude civilians and focus on the Assad regime, its pillars, security apparatus, its military machine, and international parties and parties supporting it in its war on the Syrian people.
The coalition explained that the economic situation in Syria would not have been this way had it not been for the Assad regime’s waste of the country’s resources against the Syrian people’s war, and had it not been for the Assad regime’s corruption, thefts, and capital smuggling by members of the ruling gang outside the country.
