US Vice President welcomes Senate efforts to block Biden’s ratification
US Vice President Mike Pence welcomed the efforts of a group of senators to block the ratification of Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.
This group of 11 re-elected Senators and others led by Ted Cruz want the ratification process to be delayed by 10 days to scrutinize unsupported allegations of fraud in the election.
This step is likely to fail, as it is expected that most senators will endorse Biden’s victory in the January 6 vote.
Biden, who is from the Democratic Party, will be inaugurated as President of the United States on January 20.
President Donald Trump refuses to concede defeat, reiterating his allegations of fraud without providing any evidence of this.
Vice President Mike Pence had refrained from reiterating Trump’s allegations of election fraud. But Mark Short, Pence’s chief of staff, said Saturday that Pence shared “millions of Americans their concerns about fraud and electoral irregularities.”
Short said that Pence “welcomes the efforts of members of the Senate and House of Representatives to use their authority stipulated in the law to raise objections and present evidence before Congress and the American people.”
Mike Pence, as President of the Senate, will be responsible for overseeing the January 6 hearing and declaring Biden the winner of the election.
All 50 states ratified the election results, and some did so after vote recounts and judicial appeals.
So far, US courts have rejected 60 appeals challenging Biden’s election victory. Trump made only one small gain, related to a small number of ballot papers mailed to Pennsylvania, one of the states that Biden won in the race last year.
