Joel Rayburn: I will never stop working for justice and peace for Syrians
The former US envoy to Syria, Joel Rayburn, tweeted today, Wednesday, on his Twitter account, saying: “Today is my last day at the US State Department, and I have had the honor to serve as an envoy and deputy assistant secretary of state for a year and a half in Syria.”
Rayburn added, “I will not stop working for justice and peace for the Syrians,” noting that “the interests and values of the United States call for a different type of government in Damascus, as it is a government that treats its people and the world differently,” as he put it.
Rayburn explained that he witnessed all the crimes committed by the Assad regime in Syria, noting, “I will always stand with the Syrian people, confident that justice will be served.”
He emphasized that the military solution pursued by the Assad regime made it fall in the eyes of the international community, and that the only solution in Syria is a political solution that adheres to United Nations resolutions (2254).
“The Assad regime has reached its limits and is now in its weakest state, and the Syrian people must remain united to secure a better future that guarantees their rights and takes care of their freedoms,” he said.
Regarding the Caesar Act, Rayburn stressed, “The Assad regime will not be able to evade the pressures of the Caesar Act and will not be able to overcome international isolation.”
Joel Rayburn began his position as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs and Special Envoy for Syria on July 23, 2018, and he previously worked as Senior Director for Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon at the US National Security Council in January 2017.
