The European Union welcomes the resumption of talks between Turkey and Greece
On Monday, the European Union welcomed the exploratory resumption process between Turkey and Greece, five years after the last round.
On Monday, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell made several statements at a press conference, following a meeting of European Union foreign ministers.
Borrell described the resumption of exploratory talks between Athens and Ankara as “an important step towards pushing and strengthening our dialogue and cooperation,” expressing his praise for “important messages and signals to the Turkish authorities to settle tensions last year with the European bloc.”
For his part, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ned Price said, on Monday, about the resumption of negotiations between Greece and Turkey, in a tweet on Twitter, “We support efforts aimed at reducing tension in the eastern Mediterranean.”
On Monday, Turkey announced that it wanted to “settle the problems” with Greece regarding oil and gas exploration in the eastern Mediterranean, at the conclusion of talks aimed at ending the crisis between the two countries, members of NATO.
Greek and Turkish officials met in Istanbul for “preliminary contacts” in connection with the existing differences between Ankara and Athens, which reactivated the exchange mechanism that was suspended in 2016 due to the escalation of tension.
“The settlement of all problems, including those in the Aegean Sea, is possible, and our desire to do so is complete,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin wrote on Twitter at the conclusion of the talks.
Achieving peace and stability in the region is in everyone’s interest.
