The guarantor countries of the “Astana” track set the date for the 15th summit on the Syrian Constitutional Committee
The three guarantor countries of the Astana track (Turkey, Russia and Iran) confirmed yesterday, Thursday, that the date of the 15th summit on Syria will be held on February 16 and 17, in light of the difficult circumstances that the Syrian Constitutional Committee, sponsored by the United Nations, is going through.
And the three guarantor countries announced, in a joint statement, that the 15th international summit of the Astana track is in the Russian city of Sochi.
The statement stressed the importance of adhering to the sovereignty, stability, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, noting the need to respect these principles by all parties.
This meeting comes with increasing expectations that the work of the Constitutional Committee sponsored by the United Nations will stop due to the Assad regime’s obstruction of its fifth round, its rejection of several proposals made by the opposition, as well as its refusal to delve into the constitutional contents.
In the statement of the guarantor countries of the Astana process yesterday, it was emphasized that “the constitutional committee established in Geneva as a result of the decisive contribution of the guarantors of Astana, and the implementation of the decisions of the Syrian National Dialogue Conference in Sochi, played an important role in advancing the political process that is conducted in accordance with the UN Security Council resolution,
No. 2254, facilitated by the United Nations, and led by the Syrians. ”
The last tour of Astana’s guarantors was held in December 2019 in the Kazakh capital Nur-Sultan, followed by several discussions and a tripartite summit via video between the heads of the guarantor states early last July.
