UN report: Military solutions in Syria have paved the way for a great tragedy and caused thousands of deaths and displacement
The independent UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria confirmed that the military solutions to end the Syrian crisis have paved the way for a great tragedy and caused thousands of deaths and displacement.
This came in a report issued by the committee on the humanitarian situation in Syria from 2011 to October 24, 2020.
The committee said in its report: “International efforts must be activated to end the war in Syria and bring peace and justice to it,” stressing that crimes of violating human rights law have been committed, including the crime of genocide.
The committee’s report demonstrated a map showing how the conflicting parties have expanded their areas of influence in Syria since 2013, as well as the attempts of the Assad regime forces to expand their areas of influence at the expense of the rights of Syrian civilians, and their displacement from their areas to northern Syria and border camps with Turkey.
The report pointed out that the war in Syria led to the displacement of more than half of the population, the destruction of cities, and the exposure of civilians to chemical weapons attacks, and stated that the Syrians were subjected to starvation due to the shameful restrictions imposed on humanitarian aid, some of which were approved by the UN Security Council.
Committee Chairman Paulo Sergio Pinheiro said: “The parties to the conflict in Syria have benefited from the weak intervention and negligence of the international community, and that the Syrian people have paid the price for the overwhelming violence that the Assad regime used to suppress the opposition.”
He called on the international community to place the Syrians on their list of priorities, and to think of a decisive solution to end all armed conflicts in Syria, stressing that women and children are the ones who have paid the most price for armed violence between the conflicting parties in Syria.
It is expected that the report of the independent United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Syria will be presented to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on March 11th.
