The United Nations warns of Syria reaching a state of “neither peace nor war”
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, warned in the General Assembly session held at the permanent headquarters of the United Nations in New York, about the situation in Syria from the arrival of Syria to a state of “neither war nor peace.”
“The first step must include credible progress within the constitutional committee, allowing for free and fair elections under the auspices of the United Nations,” Guterres added.
He stressed that the special envoy to Syria has so far held 5 sessions of the Constitutional Committee, noting that “the results of the committee’s work were less than his expectations, and did not live up to the expectations of the Syrian people.”
Guterres stated that the sixth session of the committee’s meetings should be different from what happened before, with clear goals and reliable working methods.
He explained that the first step must include credible progress within the Constitutional Committee in order to implement Resolution 2254 to draft a new constitution, which allows for “free and fair elections under the supervision of the United Nations.”
During its five sessions, the Syrian Constitutional Committee did not achieve any progress in the political track in Syria, which was confirmed by the UN envoy, Geir Pedersen.
