The first comment by the World Health Organization after the election of the Assad regime as a member of the Executive Council
The World Health Organization commented on the appointment of the Assad regime as a member of the Executive Council, after campaigns rejecting the decision and calls for it to be reversed.
According to what was quoted by the World Health Organization’s Media and Communications Officer, Inas Hammam, “The appointment of the elected countries to the Executive Council is done by the member states in all six regions of the World Health Organization.”
She added that “the election of the Assad regime to membership in the executive council of the organization was carried out after being elected by 22 countries in the eastern Mediterranean region.”
She indicated that one of the tasks of the World Health Organization is to achieve health results for all people and societies in all countries, and that it is not mandated to find political solutions for countries experiencing conflicts and wars.
The official called on all parties in conflict countries to respect ensuring universal access to health care.
The decision of the World Health Organization witnessed a wave of denunciation and condemnation by humanitarian organizations and some countries, for the elections of a regime whose forces during the last decade destroyed hundreds of health facilities and killed hundreds of health workers.
The United States of America, Britain and the European Union countries denounced the decision of the World Health Organization to include the Assad regime as a member of its Executive Council representing the Middle East.
It is noteworthy that the World Health Organization unanimously elected the Assad regime to fill the membership of the Executive Council in a virtual meeting of its seventy-fourth session.
