Pedersen: Horrific attacks on civilians and healthcare facilities must stop
The UN Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen condemned the bloody attack that targeted Al-Shifa Hospital in the city of Afrin.
“Such horrific attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, including health care facilities and workers, are unacceptable and must stop,” Pedersen said.
The UN envoy called on all parties to fully comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians and civilian objects.
Pedersen reiterated UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ calls for “the need for accountability those who committed crimes in Syria,” adding: “This ongoing attack and violence underscores, once again, the importance of establishing a nationwide ceasefire in Syria, and renewing efforts to make progress in implementing a resolution Security Council 2254 of 2015”.
The death toll from the bombing of the Syrian Democratic Forces on the city of Afrin, last Saturday, reached 19, including women and children.
