Response Coordinators: Extending humanitarian access will contribute to preventing real famine in the region

The Syria Response Coordinators Group commended the diplomatic efforts made by the concerned parties in reaching the latest decision regarding the entry of humanitarian aid into Syria across the border, which was unanimously approved by the UN Security Council yesterday, Friday

On July 9, 2021, the UN Security Council voted on Resolution No. 2585/2021, which stipulates the entry of humanitarian aid across the Syrian-Turkish border, the entry of humanitarian aid across the border, for a full year, divided into two phases, each phase six months.

The team stressed that the recent decision to introduce humanitarian aid across the border will greatly contribute to reducing humanitarian disasters or entering the region into a state of real famine, warning the Russian side against any political blackmail for the Syrian humanitarian file, or obstructing the implementation of any of the provisions of the new resolution in a new step to float the Assad regime.

The team stressed the need for humanitarian organizations and the international community to find additional alternative solutions during the next stage, due to the absence of any political solutions to the Syrian file so far, and to ensure the continued flow of humanitarian aid across the borders.

Yesterday, Friday, the UN Security Council unanimously approved a draft resolution prepared by Russia, the United States, Ireland and Norway on the task of delivering humanitarian aid to Syria across the border, extending the work of the Bab al-Hawa crossing on the Syrian-Turkish border for an additional 12 months, provided that the Secretary-General presence to the United Nations, after 6 months, a report on the work of the mechanism for the transfer of humanitarian aid.
