WFP: Canada will support efforts to support Syrian refugees with more than 3 million dollars
The United Nations World Food Program in Jordan clarified that Canada will support the program’s work efforts to support Syrian refugees in Jordan with about 3.2 million dollars.
“The program appreciates Canadian efforts to support Syrian refugees in Jordan because of its significant results aimed at avoiding cutting off humanitarian assistance to tens of thousands of refugees,” said Alberto Correba Mendes, the program’s representative and country director in Jordan.
He added, “The program needs an amount of 53 million US dollars to continue providing food assistance to half a million refugees in the coming months.”
For her part, Canada’s Ambassador to Jordan, Donica Petit, said that her country is committed to supporting the efforts of the World Food Program to continue providing aid to the Syrians in Jordan, adding that “they are happy to provide support at this difficult time for the program.”
She noted that her country has contributed $12.6 million in funding to support the efforts of the World Food Program in Jordan since the beginning of this year.
The World Food Program had warned at the beginning of last June that 21,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan would not receive their food aid as of July due to lack of funding.
Tens of thousands of Syrian refugees in Jordan suffer from food insecurity, in light of the scarcity of humanitarian aid provided to them by humanitarian organizations.
The number of Syrian refugees in Jordan is estimated at about 1.3 million refugees, about 670,000 of them are registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, 79% live in host communities and 21% are in camps.
