Mazloum Abdi: Biden has promised he won’t abandon us like he did with the Afghans
The leader of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, said in an interview with the British newspaper “The Times” that the American president Joe Biden gave assurances that he will not abandon us as he did Afghanistan.
Abdi stated that “residents of northeastern Syria were worried about what happened in Afghanistan”, adding: “Let’s be honest, after American withdrawal from Afghanistan, people were afraid to face the same fate.”
He added: ” Americans assured us that US policy in Syria is “totally different” from that in Afghanistan.”
Abdi stated that “it would be preferable for the Americans to pledge to stay until a final political settlement of the Syrian conflict is reached,” because, with an American military presence, he will have high hopes of winning the official recognition he has long sought for “Kurdish autonomy,” and perhaps Also to the remote Arab-majority areas in the governorates of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor, which are under his control.
He added, “We believe that the Biden administration at least reviews the issues before making decisions,” noting that “the previous Trump administration was making its decisions via Twitter, and I hope this administration will not be in the same way.”
According to the newspaper, Washington sent General Frank McKenzie, the commander of the US Central Command, on an unannounced visit to provide personal assurances to Mazloum Abdi in Syria.
