US Congress votes to disrupt drug networks in Syria

The US House of Representatives voted on an amendment requiring a joint strategy to disrupt drug networks in Syria, as part of a vote on the 2022 Defense Department budget law, which was submitted to the Senate.

The amendments also included submitting a report on the wealth of Bashar al-Assad and his family members, including his cousins, such as Makhlouf family and others.

This position comes within the framework of an American move that is considered “positive” in the Syrian issue, after the House of Representatives in Congress voted on an amendment that requires a joint strategy between American agencies, to disrupt the drug networks operating under the Assad regime.

According to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, an official spokesman for the US State Department said: The US government is concerned about drug trafficking from Syria, and is working to combat it, through multiple efforts, including “traditional law enforcement tools and capabilities.”

The US official added that the United States has “many powers to identify and detect those who lead, facilitate, or collude with drug traffickers, and transnational organized crime.”
