Russia: The United Nations must deal with the increasing number of countries in the world

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called on the United Nations to adapt to the new realities about the number of countries that is greater today than it was when the United Nations was founded.

This came during a meeting of the Valdai Forum in the Russian city of Sochi, on the statements of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Lavrov added that he supports Erdogan’ statements about ” the fate of the humanity cannot and should not be left to the mercy of a handful of countries that were the victors of the Second World War” .Noting that “it is imperative that members of the Security Council not to control the fate of the world.”

He explained that the Security Council does not claim that it has this right, and that the five permanent member states of it carry out their work in accordance with the United Nations Constitution, which embodies the common will of the international community, as well as the reduction of international conflicts.

He continued, “The United Nations and the Security Council must adapt to the new realities, because the number of countries today is not about 50 as it was when the United Nations was founded.”

He added that the number of countries was 70 when the number of Security Council members increased from 12 to 15, while today there are 193 countries, pointing out that developing countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America should be included in the Security Council.
