The European Union condemns Assad regime’s execution of 24 people in Syria for starting wildfires

The European Union condemned Assad regime’s execution of 24 people in Syria  after charging them with igniting wildfires in the forests of the Syrian coast.

The European Commission’s main foreign affairs spokesman, Peter Stano, said yesterday “The European Union condemns recently Assad executed of 24 people charging them with committing terrorist acts by igniting wildfires in the forests of the Syrian coast in September and October 2020.

Stano expressed that European Union has deep concerns, especially that minors received prison sentences  of 10 to 19 years on similar charges.

Stano noted that the European Union strongly opposes the death penalty at all times and in all circumstances, considering it a cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment that does not act as a deterrent to crime and represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity.

Stano stressed that the European Union continues to work for the global abolition of the death penalty and urges Syria to join the global trend to abolish it.

On Thursday, October 21, the Assad regime’s Ministry of Justice announced the execution of 24 people it said were criminals and “committed terrorist acts by igniting fires”,  according to the ministry’s official Facebook page
