The Qatari Committee organizing the World Cup selects two Syrian refugees as ambassadors for the 2022 tournament
The Qatari Committee organizing the World Cup has chosen two Syrian refugees from the “Zaatari” refugee camp in Jordan, as ambassadors for the World Cup that Doha will host next year, according to media reports.
The Qatar Committee’s announcement, came during an award ceremony the “Ajyal” festival in the capital, Doha, for “Captain Al Zaatari,” movie which was sponsored by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, to shed light on refugee issues and their suffering.
During the ceremony, the two Syrian youths (Mahmoud Al-Daer and Fawzi Qatlish) were announced as ambassadors for the World Cup, which will take place in Qatar in 2022.
For their part, the two young men considered, “their selection as ambassadors is a victory for the Syrian refugees issue in various countries of the world, and that what the refugee needs is an opportunity, not pity.”
The movie “Captain Al Zaatari” sheds light on refugee issues, their movements and the dreams of young people, which consist in their asylum. The film revolves around the two young men (Mohamed and Fawzi) who dream of being professional football players, despite the difficult circumstances that surround them.
The two young men affirmed that they will live up to the responsibility entrusted to them to amplify the voices of the refugees inside the refugee camps and achieve their aspirations.
The story of Muhammad and Fawzi considered one of the success stories achieved by Syrian refugees in various countries of asylum, and a credit added to the refugees’ achievements despite the difficult conditions they suffer from.
